Tin Whistle Day at The Irish Arts Center
553 W. 51st St. (Between 10th & 11th Aves.)
New York, NY

Tin Whistle Day takes place on a Sunday in September, January and March. To be notified of date of next Tin Whistle Day, please e-mail Bill Ochs: bill@pennywhistle.com

Tin Whistle Day is a free two-part tin whistle workshop taught by Bill Ochs. The workshop is designed for people who would like to preview a class before registering or who are just looking for an afternoon's instruction. Please bring a whistle in the key of D or purchase one for $10 at the workshop.

Absolute Beginners Tin Whistle: 2:00 — 3:30 pm

For folks who have never picked up a tin whistle before, we'll start from scratch. By the end of the hour you'll not only know the scale, you'll be playing simple a tune or two, including the beautiful Donegal song Níl Sé 'Na Lá (It's Not Yet Day). Absolutely no previous musical training is necessary. Fun is guaranteed!

Advanced Beginners/Intermediate Tin Whistle: 3:30 — 4:30 pm

For players who already know the scale and can play a slow Irish ballad or two, this is an introduction to the world of Irish dance music. We'll warm up by learning the march Mo Ghile Mhear, which can be heard on The Chieftains' album The Long Black Veil. Then we'll talk about the different types of dance tunes and learn to play a slide, a type of single jig popular in County Kerry. Toward the end of the session we will talk about tin whistle ornamentation and how to work ornaments into tunes. Strikes, cuts, and rolls will be thoroughly explained and de-mystified.
